Enlightenment scholarship in an international frame

Boasting an excellent library and ongoing editions projects, the IZEA is ideally located near crucial historical sites of the enlightenment, which house rich archives, libraries and art holdings. These assets, in addition to its many partnerships with important cultural and research institutions, make the IZEA among the most renowned places for the study of the Enlightenment, and a central point of contact for researchers from around the world.

At the Centre of the Early German Enlightenment

The IZEA is located in a historic building known as the ‘Red School’, which was originally built in 1896 as the all-girls school of the Francke Foundations. The IZEA houses a public library equipped with primary sources and secondary literature pertaining to the Enlightenment, both in its local and larger European contexts. The building is also home to two project groups affiliated with an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, one on modern cultures of literature and the European transfer of knowledge, and the other being the Immanuel Kant forum.
