Titel des Projekts: The German edition of Barthélemy d'Herbelot's Bibliothèque orientale and the circulation of knowledge in the Enlightenment

Zusammenfassung:

This project examines the circulation of Orientalist knowledge during the Enlightenment, focusing on the German edition of Barthémemy d'Herbelot's Bibliothèque orientale. Originally published in 1697, this seminal work in Oriental studies witnessed a resurgence in the late eighteenth century, marked by the release of several new editions. Within this context, a German translation was published in Halle by the publishing house Gebauer. Leveraging the rich archives of the Gebauer-Schwetschke-Verlag company, this study aims to scrutinise various material and practical aspects of this editorial undertaking. Furthermore, it investigates the modes of translation and adaptation employed in reproducing the original work, highlighting how the publisher's and translator's initiatives impacted the form and content. Finally, the examination aims to evaluate the reception of this new publication, raising questions about readership and reading. While shedding light on the geography and economy of the transnational circulation of ideas, texts, and knowledge during the Enlightenment, this research seeks to assess the extent to which knowledge dissemination is contingent on specific contexts and influenced by local traditions and cultures of knowledge and publishing. This case study provides valuable insights into the printing and publishing history, as well as the production, dissemination, and reception of Orientalist print and knowledge in eighteenth-century Europe.
