Forschungsprojekt
Statistics, Enlightenment and International Competition
With the application I intend to contribute to the interdisciplinary discussion on eighteenth-century statistical studies and Enlightenment. The aim of the project is to find the linchpin between the two phenomena: international competition and statistical studies. The proposal is part of a larger work in progress, issuing the intellectual and scientific contexts of statistical transfers in eighteenth-century Habsburg Monarchy. The project aims to explore a set of questions related to Achenwall’s conceptualisation of Staatenkunde in which Staatsverfassung became a key concept for capturing both the inward circumstances of the state and the interstate relations. By investigating the early eighteenth-century theorists‘ texts (Conring, Bose, Otto, Gundling, Spener, Schmeizel, Schmauß), the project seeks to inquire about the intellectual and conceptual background that paved the way to the implementation of interstate competition into the framework of state sciences and made Staatenkunde comparative not only in theory, but also in practice.
