Autonomy, Control, and the Emergence of Enlightenment Philosophical Anthropology: Condillac and Herder

The development of Enlightenment philosophical anthropology generated novel problems. The move away from understandings of the human in terms of theology, speculative metaphysics, and rationalist philosophy, and towards a naturalised theory of the human, implied a naturalisation of rationality itself. As the difference between the human and the animal collapsed key questions emerged as to the status of rational control and human autonomy. Philosophical anthropology required a rejuvenated theory of language which addressed these questions. With a focus on Condillac and Herder this research will reconstruct and critically examine the way the Enlightenment naturalised the human while still maintaining many of the traditional privileges that separated the human from the animal.
