How did Different Vistas Converge? The Ideological Roots of Christian Wolff ’s Oratio de sinarum Philosophia Practica (1721)
In 1721 and 1723, Christian Wolff (1679-1754) gave two lectures both of which happened to involve China, later he was accused of fatalism and atheism by the Pietists, and was forced to leave the university and even Prussian territory. However, his deportation from Prussia only added to his fame as a philosopher and the continuous publication of his works led to heated debates on an even larger scale in Europe. Though Wolff had not published any more work that related to China after 1726, but his attention for China was indeed a lasting interest. In this project I would like to make a serious and thorough examination of the sources of Wolff's knowledge of China. Moreover, I would also try to find fragmentary evidence in Wolff's later writings that could prove the relevance of Chinese ideas in his thought. Nevertheless, it's not my goal to overstate the INFLUENCE or historical link of Confucianism to Wolff and the German Enlightenment. I will try to show, the cross-cultural perspective would shed new light on this topic.
